Four Aspen photographers go nocturnal to turn familiar scenes into the heavenly landscapes of our dreams.

Any lensman worth his or her salt knows that “magic hour” takes place twice a day, at sunrise and sunset. Photographers in Aspen seem to be obsessed not just with fleeting sunlight but with capturing the Elk Mountains barely lit by the moon and stars. These four photographers have a particular knack for recreating the majesty of the nightscape. Their art inspires what is, for many visitors, the rare chance to witness the night sky without light pollution and at altitude.

Photographer Tamara Susa (@tamarasusaphoto) describes the experience of shooting at night like this: “Sometimes a shooting star will pass through my frame, or airglow might light up the sky. Distant headlights will paint through my photograph and the moon will give shadows at night. Nature will do its show for me, and I quietly sit in the dark and watch it unfold.”

Dirk Braun (@redmtnproductions) references a “fascination of what is beyond our grasp” that inspires him to shoot at night: “It evokes a dream.”

Joe Kyle (@the_elks) and Devin Pool (@sixsevendevin) spend weeks plotting and sleeping outdoors to create astrophotography masterpieces.

Want to see it for yourself? This summer, patrons of the Little Nell are whisked up Aspen Mountain for a “sundowner”—a glass of Champagne—and an astronomy lesson with front-row seats to one of the best shows in town.
