Where to Eat the Most Important Meal of the Day in Aspen

This year saw the closing of several favorite breakfast joints. R.I.P. Main Street Bakery, Peach’s, even Starbucks. All of a sudden, the grab-and-go muffin and cappuccino was in limited supply; the ritual of an all-morning hang with coffee and the paper in a public space was scarcely an option.


Fortunately, enterprising restaurateurs took note and a variety of tasty, bedhead-friendly options have cropped up. “What am I supposed to do here?” lamented Ryan Chadwick, owner of the Grey Lady and Escobar, and a self-described morning person, at the slim pickings. The answer, he found, was to open Grey Lady (305 S. Mill St.) for weekend brunch. The limited menu riffs off of the restaurant’s New England theme with Maine blueberry pancakes and crab eggs Benedict. Local Coffee House (614 E. Cooper Ave.) debuted with cozy couches and a democratically priced $4 latte. It serves a small breakfast menu with items like black rice porridge and avocado toast. According to many, the best breakfast place in the valley is not in Aspen at all, but in an industrial park in Carbondale. Three-year-old Silo (1909 Delores Way) is the stuff of breakfast dreams—serving the meal all day with items like duck-egg ricotta toast with crispy kale and shaved Parmesan.
